From Garden City to Garbage CityBengaluru is slowly turning from being a Garden City into a Garbage City due to the poor civic sense of the people. Vacant sites with mounds of garbage and debris are proving a real nuisance for the people living around them.
The law clearly states that these sites must be maintained by their owners , who must clean them at their own cost. The BBMP should issue notices to the site owners who fail to keep them clean and if they still don’t fall in line, it must clear the garbage itself and recover the charges from the owners.
The BBMP should also hold a meeting with site owners and persuade them to let it turn the vacant sites into a playground or use it for some community activity like holding of meetings of local resident welfare associations. Smaller sites could be converted into small gardens and bigger sites into parking lots until the owners start to build something on them themselves.
