Garbage to be covered with tarpaulin sheets

Radhakrishnan has instructed the municipal authorities to cover the
garbage accumulated at the dumping yard at Vadavathoor with tarpaulin
sheets before May 31. Mr. Radhakrishnan directed the concerned officials
to ensure that the leachate from the garbage did not flow into the
roads during the monsoon.
He issued the directive
here on Tuesday while speaking at a meeting held at the District
Collectorate to discuss the waste management issues at the dumping yard.
He also ordered the officials to ensure that the fluid was treated in a
waste treatment facility before permitting its outflow.
The
minister said that the proposed capping of the waste must be completed
by December. The Kottayam Municipality had on Monday resolved to invite
tenders for the capping process.
Monitoring committee
Mr.
Radhakrishnan also said that an eight-member monitoring committee led
by the Revenue Divisional Officer would be constituted to address all
issues concerning the Vadavathoor yard. District Collector Mini Antony,
Kottayam municipal chairman M.P. Santhosh Kumar, councillors V.K. Anil
Kumar, N.S. Harischandran, district panchayat member Philson Mathews,
District Medical Officer N.M. Ayesha Bhai, Vijayapuram grama panchayat
president Baiju Cherukottayil, other panchayat leaders and officials
were also present at the meeting.
