KOLLAM: Labour Minister P.K. Gurudasan on Thursday commissioned a Rs.30-crore garbage treatment plant of the Kollam Corporation at Kureepuzha.
He said the plant, included under a scheme of the Kerala Sustainable Urban Development Project, was constructed in a time bound manner taking into consideration the requirements of the city.
The Minister said under the LDF rule, various development projects had been implemented in the city. Development works of Kollam Canal was in the final stage and many schemes for easing traffic congestion were are also being implemented.
In his presidential address, Mayor V. Rajendrababu said the garbage treatment plant was a dream project of the city. It would bring lasting solution to one of the biggest problems faced by the city. He said the Corporation would be constructing two more such plants at Eravipuram and Kilikollur.
The plant can process 40 tonnes of garbage a day. A good portion of it will be converted to organic manure. Health Standing Committee Chairperson of the Corporation Prasanna Earnest welcomed the gathering.
