General category for Mayor, SC deputy
BANGALORE: BBMP will have its Mayor from the General category and the deputy Mayor from the scheduled castes category.
Minister for Urban Development, Law, Justice and Parliamentary Affairs S Suresh Kumar has clarified that the two posts are not reserved for backward community (A) and general categories respectively as reported in the media earlier.
BBMP cannot have its own roster system for the two coveted posts in isolation.
Its roster is decided in relation to similar posts in the seven other city corporations in the state — Mysore, Mangalore, Gulbarga, Hubli— Dharwad, Belgaum, Bellary and Davanagere.
This annual rotational roster system had started in 2008 and the first notification was issued in February 2008. Since the Bangalore Corporation did not have an elected body then, the roster system for BBMP begins now with the categories fixed in 2008.
These reservations will change annually next as per the rotation fixed then.
So, BBMP is three annual turns behind the roster schedule announced three years ago in February 2008.
In the BBMP, the BJP’s tally will further go up once the government nominates 20 persons to the local body as per the Act. These 20 members are in addition to the members elected directly, the legislators and the MPs.
The state government also has the powers to nominate 10 per cent of the total strength of the directly-elected corporators to the BBMP.
However, the nominated members will have no voting rights although they can actively participate in the BBMP deliberations.
