GHMC has no monkey catchersAug. 12: If monkeys are causing a nuisance in your residential areas, do not depend on the Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation to come to your rescue. The civic body does not have any “trained” monkey catchers. This is because the only trained team of monkey catchers, led by Qutbuddin, did not participate in the tenders invited by the GHMC in the current financial year.
Since April 2010, the GHMC has stopped capturing monkeys and the list of “monkey menace” complaints has been growing. The cages meant for keeping the captured simians before they are released in jungles too are sitting empty. Though the corporation has a couple of teams, they are not trained and the simians refuse to walk into the traps laid by them. The monkey menace is especially rampant in areas like Marredpally, Mettuguda, Padmaraonagar, Domalguda, Tarnaka, Amberpet and others residential localities.
A senior official in GHMC’s veterinary section said they have hired an expert monkey capturer from Uttar Pradesh. “He will be coming along with his team after August 14. He is a reputed monkey catcher in UP. We will also hire more monkey catchers from Ranga Reddy,” he said.
