GHMC to press into service more sweeping units in city
Special Correspondent
HYDERABAD: Bowing to the persistent demand by corporators, GHMC has
finally agreed to increase the number of sweeping units with one extra
unit in each of the 150 divisions.
These 150 units will be in addition to the current 870 sweeping units
taking care of the roads and lanes in 18 municipal circles.
For the past few months, corporators from almost all political
parties have been clamouring for increasing the number of units to
improve the sanitary conditions in their respective areas.
Rs. 18 cr. for new units
The Majlis corporators were especially vociferous and this was one of
the issues which led to their protest during the last standing
committee meeting. The municipal corporation is spending Rs.101 crore
annually for the sweeping contracts and it will be spending an
additional Rs.18 crore for the new units, a senior official said.
Meanwhile, the civic body has also sanctioned nearly 116 works for
the maintenance of Ashurkhanas, footpaths, cement roads, approach road
to Ashurkhanas, all at an estimated cost of Rs.2.95 crore for the
forthcoming Muharrum.
For maintenance of street lights, hi-mast lights, mini-mast lights
and temporary decorative lights etc., an amount of Rs.30.33 lakh has
been sanctioned for 11 works. Tenders have been finalised for the same
and works are to be grounded shortly.
