GUNTUR: The general body meeting of Guntur Municipal Corporation on Thursday passed a unanimous resolution favouring a unified Andhra Pradesh.
Introducing the resolution, corporators Pothuraju Venkat (Congress) and V. Sriram Prasad (TDP) said that a resolution in favour of a unified State should be passed in the house and conveyed to the State Government. A United State is a symbol of Telugu self-respect, Mr. Venkat said. Sensing the mood of the house, Mayor Rayapati Mohana Sai Krishna declared that the resolution was passed.
The issue of forming a Greater Guntur by amalgamating surrounding panchayats raised a furore for the second consecutive day. Telugu Desam corporators led by Mr. Sriram Prasad took objection in the manner in which the GMC wanted to take the panchayats into its fold and said that GMC should clear air about many issues, including likely rise in property tax, availability of drinking water and should present a comprehensive city development plan.
Taking exception to these remarks, Congress co-option member Mutyala Rao said that a resolution in favour of Greater Guntur was first passed when the Telugu Desam was at the helm of affairs. The TDP was only trying to derive political mileage on the issue, he pointed out. Telugu Desam corporator Y. Veeranjaneyulu displayed tried to grab attention of the house by displaying a placard with photos of deplorable sanitary conditions in 47th division.
Major resolutions
Among the other major resolutions passed included, construction of two RoBs at Nehru Nagar and Pattabhipuram level crossings, installing traffic signals in PPP mode at key traffic junctions, grant of two posts of Town Planning Officers, giving a nod for constructing a mega shopping mall at the Red Tank to E-Centric Solutions Pvt Limited, Hyderabad.
Ramky constructions have been given the nod for taking up a solid waste management project in Yadlapadu mandal.
The council also resolved to move the Kolli Sarada Whole Sale Vegetable Market on Nandivelugu Road to the old dumping yard on the Ponnur Road and Fruit Market at Patnam Bazaar to the whole sale market.
