VIJAYAWADA: The opposition parties – CPI, CPI (M) and TDP – staged a
protest against user charges for collecting garbage at Lenin centre
Monday. The opposition leaders, as part of their united stand and
agitation against the user charges, burnt copies of GO 973 that directs
the Municipal Commissioner to take necessary steps to collect the user
charges. The Praja Rajyam Party (PRP) leaders, who vowed support to the
cause, however, did not turn up.
The protesting leaders said that thousands of assessees would be
badly affected with the user charges. In spite of the stiff opposition
from the people, the State government decided to go ahead with the user
charges. CPI city secretary K. Subba Raju, CPI(M) city secretary R.
Raghu, state committee member Ch. Babu Rao, TDP urban vice president S.
Ravindra Varma and others were present.
