Gulbarga bypoll: 24 candidates file papers
Aug. 25: Twenty four candidates have filed forty two nominations for the byelection to the Gulbarga (South) Assembly constituency, scheduled to be held on September 13.
Congress candidate Ajay Singh and JD(S) nominee Aruna Chandrasekhar Patil Revoor also filed their nominations here on Wednesday, the last date for doing so. The BJP’s Shashil Namoshi filed a second set of nominations, informed, returning officer Amaresh Naik. A total of seventeen independent candidates have filed nominations for the election.
Janata Dal(S) state president H.D. Kumaraswamy who accompanied Ms Revoor when she arrived to file the papers, said the contest for the seat would be a triangular one and added that the party was confident of winning the seat.
The sympathy for late BJP MLA Chandrasekhar Patil Revoor’s family and the alleged injustice meted out to his family by denying a ticket to his family members would play a crucial role in the election, he said. Congress nominee Ajay Singh however did not feel the sympathy factor would play a significant role and said it would have worked if the BJP had fielded Ms Revoor.
“The BJP itself has done a favour to late Revoor’s family,” he added. Mr Namoshi said the welfare programmes being implemented by the BJP government for the past two years and the experience he had gathered during his two decades in politics, would help him retain the seat.
In another boost to the JD(S), as many as thirteen BJP corporators of Gulbarga city municipal corporation quit the party and joined the JD(S) at a campaign meeting.
