GVMC gears up for ward panel polls
Notification likely by month-end |
VISAKHAPATNAM: After the keenly fought election to the Standing Committee of the Greater Visakhapatnam Municipal Corporation, it is now the turn of the ward committees for which a notification is likely to be issued by the month-end.
The ward committees should be formed within three months of the election of the Standing Committee. The committees are being formed as a part of municipal reforms for transparency and people’s participation.
From each ward six members will be nominated to the committee from among resident welfare associations, taxpayers’ associations, self-help groups, senior citizens and prominent citizens. However, functioning RWAs in existence at least for one year only are eligible.
According to officials, the process will take time as 15 days’ time will be given to file applications. After that scrutiny will be taken up and council meeting will be held for nominating the members.
Representatives for area sabhas will also be nominated by dividing the ward into four parts forming part of the ward committees.
The ward population is put at an average of 20,000 going by the 2001 census.
The ward committees will play a role in the budget-making process of the corporation.
