GVMC opens control rooms
In view of the threat of heavy winds and rain lashing
the city due to very severe cyclonic storm ‘Lehar’ that is likely to
cross the coast on Thursday, the Greater Visakhapatnam Municipal
Corporation has opened control rooms at the main office and all zonal
offices.

0891-2569335 would be operated at the GVMC main office. At Zone 1 –
0891-2503932, Zone 2- 0891-2746314, Zone 3 – 9951980299, Zone 4 –
0891-2711480, Zone 5 – 0891-2750878, at Anakapalle – 08924-222345 and at
Bheemunipatnam 08933-229535, can be contacted for any civic
emergencies, GVMC Commissioner M.V. Satyanarayana said in a statement
released here.
The civic administration was all geared up to meet any emergency arising out of the cyclone, he said.
Teams
of officials and staff from different departments were formed and they
would be available on hand to rush to any part of the city, he added.
The
civic authorities have taken preventive measures to ensure that
low-lying areas would not get submerged. In the eventuality of any
flooding, the administration was in all preparedness for evacuation of
the affected persons, the Commissioner said.
All steps were taken to ensure supply of drinking water and also generators kept on standby for the purpose, he said.
The drains had also been cleared to ensure smooth flow of water, he added.
