GVMC to form ‘area sabhas’
Sabhas are expected to play an active role in improving civic amenities and greenery
The Greater Visakhapatnam Municipal Corporation is
gearing up for formation of ‘area sabhas’ by nominating representatives.
Area sabhas are proposed in view of the extent of the city with the
merger of Gajuwaka municipality and 32 gram panchayats.
The
government lays down that for cities with more than 10 lakh population,
for every 5,000 population there should an area sabha. Since the area
representative will be unable to represent the problems of people, it is
proposed to form a committee. It is expected to play an active role in
improving civic amenities and greenery, implementing welfare and
development activities.
The division of the area is
decided basing roughly on a polling station area. Representatives of
non-governmental organisations, women groups, youth and senior citizen
associations, environmental activists and prominent citizens may apply
for the area sabha.
The various associations/organisations should have been registered for one year.
The
application for nomination as representative of the area should be
submitted between December 8 and 23 at the ward committee offices.
Scrutiny
The applications will be scrutinized between December 23 and 26 by respective zone commissioners.
Eligible persons will be nominated at a special meeting of the general body of the corporation to be convened for the purpose.
NGOs, women groups, senior citizen associations can apply for membership
Application should be submitted at ward committee offices
