Noisy exchanges at civic body meeting
Affected flat owners too attend it
VISAKHAPATNAM: A meeting organised by GVMC on Tuesday to discuss the
fallout of the retaining wall collapse had to led to noisy exchanges
between Deputy Mayor K. Dorabbai and corporator Dadi Satyanarayana
leading to the Mayor stating that the HMC Act had specific provisions
for recovery (of money) in such situations and a decision would be taken
after discussing it in the general body meeting.
Mr. Dorabbai stated that to provide relief to the families that had
been rendered homeless because of the wall collapse the corporation
should spare funds and it could be recovered later from them.
Mr. Satyanarayana maintained that there was no precedent and it would
lead to more such instances in future and builders taking advantage.
An altercation ensued between the two with each bitterly criticising
the other. The apartment residents present took exception to Mr.
Satyanaryana’s contention.
He later clarified that his intention was not that the affected
should not be helped but builders should be made to pay for their
faults.
MLAs Malla Vijay Prasad and Ch. Venkatramaiah and TDP floor leader Ch.V. Pattabhiram and others intervened.
Floor leaders Behera Bhaskara Rao, AJ Stalin and Botta Eswaramma,
Standing Committee members Jiyyani Sridhar, Banala Srinivas, Perla
Vijaychander and BSS Umamaheswara Rao and several affected flat-owners
participated.
