HC: Convert unused building into night shelter
The Delhi High Court today asked the Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) to convert a portion of a building lying unused for several years into a night shelter to accommodate homeless people during this winter.
In an int erim direction, a Division Bench headed by Chief Justice A P Shah asked the MCD to convert a portion of its four-storeyed commercial building at Motia Khan into a temporary night shelter at the earliest for homeless people, including those from the Pusa Road roundabout (which was demolished recently).
Appearing for the Delhi government, counsel Najmi Waziri said the Chief Secretary has convened a meeting on Wednesday with senior officers of the MCD, Delhi Development Authority, New Delhi Municipal Council, Department of Education and also the officers from the Union Urban Development Ministry to discuss the short-term action plan to rehabilitate the destitute.
