HC cracks the whip against shops cornering parking space
CHENNAI: Coming down heavily on the practice of business establishments cornering valuable road space near their shops/showrooms to create exclusive parking lots, the Madras high court has directed the civic and police authorities in the city to take action against violators.
The first bench, comprising Chief Justice M Yusuf Eqbal and Justice T S Sivagnanam, passing orders on a public interest writ petition against unauthorised occupation of road margins by business houses, banks and hospitals, said corporation and city police officials need to “ensure that public paid parking areas are available for use for the general public for a fee” and ensure that they do not end up being reserved for private parties.
In the PIL, K Krishnamani contended that private shops put up ropes and barricaded road margins to park their own vehicles or that of their customers. The general public was deprived of places to park vehicles unless they were customers of a particular establishment, he said.
