Heavy rains bring down building at Curchorem
MARGAO: A part of a dilapidated building located near the Curchorem-Sanvordem railway station at Curchorem, that housed several commercial units, gave way on Thursday morning, largely owing to incessant rains.
However, as the incident occurred before the traders had opened their shops, no casualties were reported.
The two-storey building was in a rundown condition and had not been maintained for years together.
The Curchorem Cacora Municipal Council (CCMC) had also served notices to the traders to vacate the building as it was found to be unsafe for use.
“The building housed at least 10-12 shops. The CCMC had sent at least two notices, the latest only a month back, asking the traders doing business in the building to vacate the premises. The traders housed in the adjoining building were also asked to vacate the building in view of the likelihood of the wall of the dilapidated structure crashing on this building. The owner of the structure was also asked several times to get the building restored to a proper condition, but the owner preferred not to act,” chief officer Sudin Natu told TOI.
Though the exact amount of loss could not be ascertained, official sources informed that the affected traders would be compensated through the district disaster management funds. tnn
