Herbal tea for Rs 1 in Jayalalithaa canteens soon

Chennai: The
overwhelming response from the public is likely to drive the
government to serve herbal tea at Re 1 in Amma canteens. However,
government’s final nod is awaited. The corporation, which has been
ascertaining the feedback from the public, initially planned to
introduce lemon rice and vada at subsidised rates. However, the idea
was shelved owing to operational hazards, opined a senior corporation
official.

“Most of people want a
revision in the menu, but the idea here is to serve the downtrodden and
poor students. Already the civic body is incurring overhead costs due
to heavy subsidisation. Any teething problems in the canteens will be
identified and sorted out in a phased manner,” he added.

The
herbal canteen inaugurated in the city corporation headquarters has
also been a huge hit due to its low cost pricing and quality control.
The herbal tea launched in the canteen received good response and
the idea will now be extended to Amma canteens also, sources said.

At
a time when the corporation is facing flak from archrival DMK over
piling garbage and mosquito menace, Amma canteens have become a image
saving act and its benefits have started reaching the public
particularly in congested localities. Both the mayor and corporation
commissioner are keen on this project’s success and its sustainability.
Periodic reviews are conducted, said another corporation official.
