Hindmata flood solution in sight, says civic chief
MUMBAI: It took just a few monsoon showers to bring top bureaucrats rushing to chronic flooding spots near Hindmata and Parel. A day after the areas were inundated, chief secretary JP Dange and civic chief Swadheen Kshatriya took stock of the situation and said waterlogging in central Mumbai will soon come to an end.
Kshatriya said the Mumbai Port Trust (MbPT) agreed to give the civic body land to construct a pumping station. The area between Hindmata Junction and Sardar Hotel at Kalachowkie has been a traditional flooding spot. As part of its Brimstowad project, the BMC had decided to construct a pumping station at the Britannia Outfall in Worli, but officials said they were not getting enough land to construct it.
“After a meeting with MbPT officials last week, they promised to provide us land. Once the pumping station is constructed, it will be a long-term solution for the problem of water-logging in central suburbs. It will be easier to pump out water from these areas,” said Kshatriya.
Just like the Irla and Haji Ali pumping stations have promised to provide relief this monsoon, the Britannia outfall will provide relief to areas near Hindmata junction, Dadar, Parel, BIT Chawl, Lower Parel, Saat rasta, Mahalaxmi and Colaba.
Dange, after inspecting the areas said cleaning of the drains, especially in low-lying areas, should be a constant procedure, and not just a pre-monsoon fixture. “These drains need to be cleared regularly.
