Launches drive to clear algae from Hussainsagar lake |
HYDERABAD: As summer peaks, a special drive to clean Hussainsagar of the algal bloom that has started to accumulate is all set to be launched. The exercise is expected to offer some reprieve for the citizens from the bad odour that usually emanates from the lake during the season.
The Hyderabad Metropolitan Development Authority (HMDA) is working out the plan to address the problems posed by the green algae and for the purpose has decided to press boats into service along with dredgers.
“Apart from the boats available here, we are getting few boats from other lakes in and around the city to tackle the problem. These boats will be used to disturb the green algae and ensure that it does not turn blue,” says Sunil Kumar Gupta, Member Environment, HMDA.
Every summer, those travelling along the Tank Bund and Necklace Road have to suffer from the foul smell that comes from the lake. The same has been attributed to eutrophication, a process wherein water bodies end up with enhanced plant growth and the same reducing dissolved oxygen in the water.
Expert take
The officials say that by disturbing the green algae and preventing it from turning blue, the problem of foul odour from the lake can be handled. Initially, about five boats are to form the fleet for the task. Also, the HMDA has small dredgers that usually are used to collect the floating material from the lake and push it to the shore area. Instead of the practice, officials are looking at other ways to remove the accumulated unwanted material from the lake.
“We are now planning to attach a barge to the dredger and have the floating material piled on barge and take it to the shore. Instead of pushing it to the shore, we will have the barge carry the same,” says Mr.Gupta.
