New Delhi: The ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and the opposition Congress of the Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) appeared united for once in demanding action, during the MCD House meeting on Monday, against members of the civic agency’s Executive wing for their alleged “repeated misbehaviour”. Mayor Prithvi Raj Sawhney has now directed Municipal Commissioner K S Mehra to issue suspension orders against Deputy Commissioner Dharamveer Verma and Executive Engineer S K Chauhan, Karol Bagh zone.Councillors disrupted the House meeting, claiming in unison that the MCD officials are “often rude in their conduct with the councillors and misbehave with them”.
The issue was first raised by Suraj Kumar, councillor of the Inderpuri ward in Karol Bagh zone, who alleged that DC Verma, Chauhan and other officials of the zone had misbehaved with him and had “caused harm to his reputation”.
“They sealed the premises of my shop where I sell UPS batteries. They falsely claimed it was unauthorised as I was manufacturing batteries, which is not permitted under the DMC Act. Later, however, my shop was desealed after I proved I was not indulging in any unauthorised activity,” Kumar said.
He added that Verma had even filed an FIR against him, following which he was arrested by the police. “I was let off only after furnishing a bail bond, even though I am innocent,” he told the MCD House.
Other councillors too complained of misbehaviour on the part of MCD officials, “especially the Executive wing and junior engineers”. Manju, area councillor of Shahdara (North) zone alleged that during a recent meeting, the zone’s executive engineer, one Mandir Kumar, “misbehaved” with her and walked out of the meeting. The Mayor has now ordered an inquiry into the incident and has sought a report within the next three days.
