VMC to encourage meritorious students

Staff Reporter

VIJAYAWADA: The Vijayawada Municipal Corporation (VMC) convened student-corporate colleges interface meeting here on Thursday. As many as 230 students, who secured more than 500 marks in SSC, turned up for the meeting. Of this, 128 students were assured of admissions into the colleges including Sri Chaitanya, Narayana, NRI, Satya Sai, and Sri Vidya colleges. Municipal Commissioner G. Ravi Babu urged the colleges' principals and representatives to offer free seats to them in view of their marks and financial status as well. The colleges, however, were non-committal about the fee waiver. The students were asked to come to the college on Friday. Another round of discussions was required to achieve the set target of free seats for the meritorious students.

Last year, the colleges and parents faced some problems during second year. The parents felt that fee waiver would continue for second year also, while the colleges insisted that the students should exhibit similar calibre in intermediate and secure good marks. The VMC is, now, focussing on these issues also, officials say.
