E-seva issuing birth and death certificates now

HYDERABAD: DO you want to save yourself the hassle of visiting the corporation to get a new birth or death certificate? Then look no further than your nearby e-Seva centre. The issuing of birth and death certificates by e-Seva centres is getting good response from people.

The service is a hit with people and continuing despite stiff resistance from staff of Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC), which earlier used to issue the same. It stopped issuing the certificates ever since the centres started offering the service. So far, 50,781 applications have been recieved and except for 2624 applications, the rest have already been issued.

Overwhelmed by the response, GHMC commissioner warned that staff might be fined, if they deliberately delay issuing of the certificates, according to e-Seva director Dr.K. Gopinatha.

“As soon as the customer submits an application and a fee of Rs 30, we send it to GHMC the next day by courier. After verifying the details, GHMC sends us the certificate within a time period of seven to twenty days, which in turn is issued to the customer,” Gopinatha explained.

“Everyone knows it is not easy to get a certificate from GHMC. Though it is still in the trial run, the service has met good public response. Even if the government wants to withdraw it, it would meet much criticism as there are many stakeholders,” he maintained.

Moreover, e-Seva has also started offering the facility of filing IT returns and issuing PAN card a month ago, apart from increasing the number of centres accepting passport applications to 40.

The e-Seva centres issued about 4.5 lakh Electors’ Photo Identity Cards (EPICs) at Rs 10 per card, including corrections since the last general elections till 15 days ago.

“We stopped the service following the state election commission’s directions as it wanted to publish final list of voters,’’ said e-Seva deputy director K Yedukondalu. “We took up the task of distributing lakhs of EPICs approved by the concerned enrolment officer as the election commission could not do it effectively due to lack of logistics,” he explained.

Apart from the already available 150 services, e-Seva also wants to provide all services occasionally as required by the public. It is looking to issue tickets for the recent Tollywood Star Trophy.
