For speedy work, PCMC to give laptops to officers

The Pimpri-Chinchwad Municipal Corporation will buy 200 laptops for its officers in a bid to improve the speed of work. The civic body will spend Rs 90 lakh towards this.

The move comes as part of the computerisation drive initiated by the corporation. Many of the civic departments are being computerised using funds received under the Jawaharlal Nehru National Urban Renewal Mission (JNNURM). As many as 1,100 computers have been installed at the PCMC headquarters and the four ward offices. Officers have also been provided with BlackBerry phones to improve their response time.

According to PCMC officials, the emphasis is now on greater use of technology for increasing the work efficiency of staff. Many functions like paying taxes, building permissions, tender process and birth and death registration are being done with the help of computers and the Internet.

Data regarding environment status reports, Right to Information Act and various initiatives launched by the departments are all available on the website of the corporation, they said.

Those living in municipal limits can now directly e-mail their complaints to officials.

Computer officer Neelkanth Poman said the corporation had received Rs 1.15 crore under the e-governance scheme, under which 50 class I officers were given laptops. “The PCMC has undertaken several projects; equipping officers with laptops would go a long way in speeding up the pace of work.”
