MCD records now on ‘microfilm’

In a move aimed at ensuring a paperless administration, the MCD is microfilming records of its meetings. The measure will help in better record keeping and more space saving, said an MCD official.

Some 1200 volumes of records, consisting of over six lakh folios are kept at the office.

The microfilming project will cost the MCD around Rs 3.5 crore. Microfilming is a popular method of document preservation.

NMC websites to give info on agents, hoardings

NAGPUR: The Nagpur Municipal Corporation (NMC) has decided to launch two websites, giving information about its agents and the approved hoardings put up across the city, to help consumers, advertisers and the common citizens.

The civic agency has appointed 596 persons as agents, who are authorised to collect bills, payments and documents required for certificates to be issued by NMC, besides other NMC related work. The agents will start working from next Monday.

However, a big problem facing the civic body was communicating the identity and addresses of agents to citizens. Municipal commissioner Aseem Gupta has decided to launch a website for the agents - www.nmcagents.org. Gupta told the media on Wednesday that more agents would be appointed in the future depending on the response from citizens.

Commenting on the website for hoardings - www.nmchoardings.com - the commissioner said that it was the only way to control erection of illegal hoardings. "All our advertisers will be given a log in and password on Thursday. They will be given a week's time to upload photographs and locations of their hoardings on our website. Any hoarding that does not figure on our website will be considered to be an illegal one."

Gupta further said that the advertisers would have to immediately upload pictures of a new hoarding. Any advertiser can get the permit for erecting hoardings renewed at the click of a mouse. Unless the NMC estate department has decided not to renew the permit, the advertiser can click on that particular hoarding, pay the required amount electronically to NMC and get his permit renewed.

Advertisers can also seek permits for temporary hoardings online. "If somebody else has not booked the spot for that particular period, you will be asked to pay the required amount and you will get a confirmation of the booking," he said.

Citizens can also lodge complaints regarding illegal hoardings on the website. "We will take action against such illegal hoardings within seven days," Gupta asserted.

For speedy work, PCMC to give laptops to officers

The Pimpri-Chinchwad Municipal Corporation will buy 200 laptops for its officers in a bid to improve the speed of work. The civic body will spend Rs 90 lakh towards this.

The move comes as part of the computerisation drive initiated by the corporation. Many of the civic departments are being computerised using funds received under the Jawaharlal Nehru National Urban Renewal Mission (JNNURM). As many as 1,100 computers have been installed at the PCMC headquarters and the four ward offices. Officers have also been provided with BlackBerry phones to improve their response time.

According to PCMC officials, the emphasis is now on greater use of technology for increasing the work efficiency of staff. Many functions like paying taxes, building permissions, tender process and birth and death registration are being done with the help of computers and the Internet.

Data regarding environment status reports, Right to Information Act and various initiatives launched by the departments are all available on the website of the corporation, they said.

Those living in municipal limits can now directly e-mail their complaints to officials.

Computer officer Neelkanth Poman said the corporation had received Rs 1.15 crore under the e-governance scheme, under which 50 class I officers were given laptops. “The PCMC has undertaken several projects; equipping officers with laptops would go a long way in speeding up the pace of work.”
