Urban forestry committee for city

KOCHI: An Urban Forestry Committee will be formed for Kochi city for protecting trees in the urban landscape. The Kerala Forests and Wildlife Department will lead the movement in association with the Kerala Agricultural University, Kerala Forest Research Institute, Kochi Corporation, representatives of stakeholders, and non-governmental organisations. The decision was taken at a workshop on urban forestry held on Monday. Earlier, Forest Minister Benoy Viswom inaugurated the workshop organised by the association and the department. K.R. Viswambharan, Vice-Chancellor of the Kerala Agricultural University, presided. Simon Britto, MLA; E.M. Sunilkumar, chairman, Town Planning Standing Committee of Kochi Corporation; and S. Sitaraman, environmentalist, spoke. B.S. Corrie, Chief Conservator of Forests welcomed the gathering and N.C. Induchoodan, Divisional Forest Officer, welcomed the gathering.
