Translocation saves 700 trees in city
Staff Reporter
HYDERABAD: The unique project of translocation of trees taken up by the District Tree Protection Committee (DTPC) has so far helped save 700 trees in the State capital. Apart from translocation, cutting down of close to 600 trees have been avoided during the last two years through persuasion. Majority of the trees saved and translocated are Ficus (Marri). Representatives of various NGOs told presspersons here on Wednesday that for efficient tree protection, the DTPC had to be strengthened. More manpower, better infrastructure and coordination between municipal bodies were needed, they said.
“There is a need for dedicated personnel for tree protection because forest rangers, beat men and squads are already busy with their regular work.
Dedicated funds and better coordination between GHMC, HMDA and other civic bodies is needed,” said M. Ved Kumar of Forum for Better Hyderabad.
The NGOs also felt the need to take up awareness drives by holding interactive sessions with public sector organisations, schools and large institutions.
