Bags made of recycled cloth to replace plastic in M’lore

Mangalore, Oct. 10: In a step towards cleansing this city of plastic, the local authorities plan to introduce bags made of recycled cloth.

“Unless we find an alternative to plastic, we cannot ban it. Thus, we are chalking out plans for some alternatives,” said Mangalore City Corporation (MCC) Commissioner K.N. Vijayaprakash.

“Banning plastic completely at one go will be difficult as it is extensively used everywhere including pharmaceuticals and milk suppliers,” a senior officer in MCC said. “There is a proposal to use cloth bag made out of recycled cloth. As the bag will be made by recycling old clothes, the bag will be available at a cheaper cost. It is likely to be less than Rs 3 per bag,” a senior officer told DC.

The switch, from plastic bags to ones made by recycled clothes, would probably be visible first in major malls in the city.

A meeting of owners of all malls would be called shortly by the MCC to discuss the possibility of introducing bags made of recycled clothes.
