Mayor: Mavallipura will be compensated

BANGALORE: Residents of Mavallipura village met mayor Venkatesh Murthy on Wednesday placed their demands before him, and got several assurances.

If the mayor's promises come true, Mavallipura should get a dispensary, drinking water supply through tankers from Bangalore, compensation and government jobs for the eight families whose breadwinners died due to health hazards caused by the landfill. The villagers have also demanded compensation for the families that have lost livestock due to the landfill.

The Pollution Control Board had on August 11 sent a notice to BBMP to stop dumping waste at the landfill. The Palike is yet to submit a compliance report.

The meeting, scheduled at noon, was delayed by an hour. The villagers grew angry and refused to meet the mayor in his chamber. The meeting was attended by the family members of those who had died of health hazards caused by the landfill. Ravi NS, 26, suffering from kidney failure, attended. "I am one of the victims of the landfill. Our groundwater is polluted because of it," Ravi told TOI.
