HDMC plants 8,000 saplings under ‘Hasiru Usiru’ programme
The Hubli-Dharwad Municipal Corporation, which has embarked on an ambitious project of planting around 25,000 saplings during this monsoon season, has already planted around 8,000 saplings in various localities.
The ‘Hasiru Usiru’programme was launched on June 6 with the planting of saplings at Heggeri graveyard.
At the function, Hubli-Dharwad Municipal Corporation Commissioner Y.S. Patil had said that 25,000 saplings of 16 different species would be planted in open spaces, gardens, cemeteries and on either side of the prominent roads in the twin cities.
“These plants procured from the Forest Department are being handed over to the Assistant Commissioners of each of the 12 zones of the HDMC and they would be responsible for planting them in their respective zones. Over 11,000 saplings have already been procured out of which 8,000 are planted while the remaining will be procured soon,” said S.R. Math, Assistant Director of Horticulture of HDMC.
Mr. Math said that the programme was one of the most ambitious in the history of the HDMC especially because for the first time so many fruit-bearing trees are being planted.
Executive Engineer of HDMC S.S. Mannangi said that under the Hasiru Usiru Campaign, saplings would be planted wherever there was potential space and a decent availability of water. Three tractors, two in Hubli and one in Dharwad had been procured for the distribution of these saplings to the various zones, he said.
“More plants will mean a greener city which will further ensure a cleaner and healthier environment. The corporation is working to balance between natural trees and atmosphere to keep the city cool” he said.
