Chemical firm fined Rs 5 lakh for dumping waste

BANGALORE: Karnataka Chemsyn Limited has been fined Rs 5 lakh for dumping chemical waste at Srirampura in December last year. The Jigani-based drug manufacturing company was found guilty of contaminating ground soil through chemical dumping, officials of Karnataka State Pollution Control Board (KSPCB) said.

On December 29, the police had seized seven barrels containing hazardous chemicals, which were found abandoned in a deserted space adjacent to the railway track.

Preliminary investigations indicated that the dumped substance was ‘mother liquor’, which comprises a bromide compound used by bulk manufacturers of drugs.

The solvents at the site were benzene and toluene.

KSPCB chairman Sadashivaiah said that the company had agreed to pay around Rs five lakh for treating the waste and disposing it. He said that the samples had been sent for examination and the results would be out soon.
