PCMC likely to ban plastic carrybags

PUNE: The Pimpri-Chinchwad Municipal Corporation standing committee will approve a ban on use of polythene carrybags next week, committee chairman Dnyaneshwar Bhalerao.

Bhalerao said that polythene carrybags were rampantly used by citizens. These bags cause a nuisance as they are not disposed off easily.

Meanwhile, Madhukar Babar, president, Pimpri-Chinchwad Plastic Manufacturers Association, told TOI that, "A delegation of plastic manufacturers had met the municipal commissioner a few days ago. We have demanded that the PCMC should only ban polythene bags that are too thin and pose danger to environment. We have also demanded that the manufacturers should be taken into confidence before implementing such a ban."

Babar said the industrialists who manufacture thin polythene bags are ready to stop production.
