PCMC plans measures to reduce pollution of Pavana

PUNE: The Pimpri-Chinchwad Municipal Corporation (PCMC) has planned various steps to reduce pollution of Pavana river near Subhash ghat in Pimpri.

"Containers will be kept at the ghat for devotees to dispose of nirmalya', instead of throwing them in the river," Dilip Gawde, assistant commissioner, told TOI. "The toilet blocks there are located at a lower level than the drainage pipeline. So mechanised sewage clearance system will be pressed into service to clean up the septic tanks."

The PCMC will also request the police to increase patrolling along the ghat to deter people from misusing the area for anti-social activities, Gawde added.

Meanwhile, environmentalists from the Indrayani Bachao Kruti Samiti, Pavana Sudhar Manch and Paryavaran Sudhar Samiti visited the Subhash ghat on Tuesday and conducted a cleanliness drive with help from the civic staff.

Vikas Patil, founder-president, Indrayani Bachao Kruti Samiti, said: "There was nirmalya' and human waste floating in the river. The waste from the toilets nearby is directly released into the river. Washermen wash clothes along the riverbank. There is no container to deposit nirmalya', so people were found throwing the nirmalya' and plastic bags into the river."

The civic employees did not pay attention to the cleanliness of the ghat and adequate manpower was not deputed to clean the area, Patil added.
