PMC on green citizen search for tree-mapping project

As per the directions of the High Court, the city's civic body has now sought public participation for its ambitious tree-mapping project, a first-of-its-kind in the country, that would not only include a tree census, but would also geo-tag each tree to provide information on its location, size and species along with a photograph of the tree.

"We have designed an easy-to-use application that would be made available to PMC for free," said Jitendra Shah, who has been appointed by the court to oversee the setup and implementation of the pilot tree census through public participation.

The only thing required to make the project successful is to be able to get the Geographic Information System (GIS ) basemap and data about the property ownership, he said. "The project will not move forward without the availability of technical inputs."

This census will be GIS-based and each tree will be geo-tagged with all relevant information, Shah said. This census, if successful through community participation, will pave way for a similar census across India, he added.

PMC Garden Superintendent Ashok Ghorpade said the demand has been submitted to the city engineering department, but is yet to get any response. "We are pursuing it further as the GIS base map of city is necessary for electronic tree mapping," he said, adding the PMC has made an appeal to citizens for their participation in the project.

To start with, PMC, in association with Bluewiss, has taken up a pilot project for Viman Nagar. "In 2010, Bluewiss had mapped the bio-diversity of Viman Nagar and presented this data to the citizens of Viman Nagar during its annual Sundara Vasundhara festival. Thus, the exercise would be very useful for the pilot project," said Niranjan Upasani of Bluewiss.

He said PMC has been directed by the High Court to conduct a pilot tree census through community participation.

"As we all know, PMC had set out to conduct a tree census several times. But, the data collected then is no longer usable now, or for any future planning and analysis. This time, the community has been authorised with the responsibility of carrying out the census," said Upasani.

The Hubli-Dharwad Municipal Corporation, which has embarked on an ambitious project of planting around 25,000 saplings during this monsoon season, has already planted around 8,000 saplings in various localities.

The ‘Hasiru Usiru’programme was launched on June 6 with the planting of saplings at Heggeri graveyard.

At the function, Hubli-Dharwad Municipal Corporation Commissioner Y.S. Patil had said that 25,000 saplings of 16 different species would be planted in open spaces, gardens, cemeteries and on either side of the prominent roads in the twin cities.

“These plants procured from the Forest Department are being handed over to the Assistant Commissioners of each of the 12 zones of the HDMC and they would be responsible for planting them in their respective zones. Over 11,000 saplings have already been procured out of which 8,000 are planted while the remaining will be procured soon,” said S.R. Math, Assistant Director of Horticulture of HDMC.

Mr. Math said that the programme was one of the most ambitious in the history of the HDMC especially because for the first time so many fruit-bearing trees are being planted.

Executive Engineer of HDMC S.S. Mannangi said that under the Hasiru Usiru Campaign, saplings would be planted wherever there was potential space and a decent availability of water. Three tractors, two in Hubli and one in Dharwad had been procured for the distribution of these saplings to the various zones, he said.

“More plants will mean a greener city which will further ensure a cleaner and healthier environment. The corporation is working to balance between natural trees and atmosphere to keep the city cool” he said.
