Budget storm likely in sesion today

BANGALORE: The Bruhat Bengaluru Mahangara Palike council is likely to have a heated session on budget on Thursday.

On Wednesday, Opposition members appeared in no mood to accept the `8,488crore budget.

"They must represent the budget," said M Nagaraju, the Opposition leader in the council.

Stating there were lapses in the budget, he said the ruling party should present a budget with the "actual figures".

He pointed out that the Palike has sought `1,300crore grant from the government, but that the latter has not kept any money aside for this purpose.

He said even the AkramaSakrama (scheme to regularise unauthorised colonies) had not been approved yet but the Palike had made plans that would not even be implemented this year.

He said he and his party would not allow the approval of any of these projects and protest against the budget.

The Congress leader also said the ruling party had violated the Karnataka Municipal Corporation Act by not setting up the standing committees.

"This is a deficit budget and has also violated the Karnataka Municipal Corporation Act," said Padmanabha Reddy, JD(S) leader in the council.

Accusing the ruling party of misguiding the people, he said the BJP had announced a budget of more than `8,400 crore when there was no money in the Palike.

"This budget will send the Palike 20 years back," he said and added that development would remain a distant and unfulfilled dream in the city.

He said he would bring out these major violations of the budget and "unravel" it before the people.

He said the Mayor would have to address these issues before moving on to the next topics for discussions.
