With an eye on the forthcoming elections to urban local bodies, the Hubli-Dharwad Municipal Corporation budget has outlined several populist schemes.

Chairman of the Standing Committee on Tax Fixation, Finance and Appeals Shivu Hiremath presented the budget for 2013-14 on Tuesday.

A sum of Rs. 10 lakh has been set aside to provide laptops to pourakarmikas’ children who are pursuing professional courses and research and Rs. 5 lakh has been earmarked for the Vidyashri Puraskar to be presented to toppers in the PU examination.

A sum of Rs. 2 crore has been earmarked for the Suvarna Shri insurance scheme.

In the wake of increased atrocities against women, the corporation has set aside Rs. 25 lakh to conduct awareness programmes and camps where women will be taught self-defence.

The corporation also plans to involve citizens in the development of the twin cities. It has planned to set up ward committees comprising citizens and has allocated Rs. 25 lakh for this purpose.

It has also proposed the construction of a stadium at Navanagar at a cost of Rs. 1.37 crore and as well as a town hall at the cost of Rs. 9 crore.
