Budget to be placed before council today

GUNTUR: The annual budget of Guntur Municipal Corporation will be placed before the council on Saturday. The year's budget rides high on expectations with a couple of massive projects, including the comprehensive drinking water project, and the revised estimates of expenditure in the annual budget were pegged at Rs.258.88 crores, while the estimates on income too were raised to Rs.271.28 crores and the resulting surplus at Rs.16.61 crores. But the GMC has set an ambitious target of raising income to the tune of Rs.271.28 crores and hopes to garner the tax arrears in a time-bound programme.

The GMC has shown allotments to different schemes, including IHSDP, being taken in slums with an estimated cost of Rs.15 crores, sanitation works at a cost of Rs.9 crores with assistance of 12th and 13th finance commission grants, central lighting works with assistance from VGTM-UDA, Rs.45 lakhs to develop parks and Rs.20 lakhs for development of Gujjangundla walking track. The JKC College Road would be developed at a cost of Rs.1.5 crore with assistance from VGTM-UDA.

Among the new projects coming up in the next financial year include construction of modern fish market and animal slaughtering houses at a cost of Rs.15 crores, slum development under Rajiv Awas Yojana at a cost of Rs.20 crores, expanding 12 main roads at an estimated cost of Rs.10 crores, development of multi-purpose complexes with assistance from APITCO and construction of bus shelters.
