Infrastructure, sanitation get priority in Muvattupuzha

KOCHI: Building a central bus stand at Vazhapilly, a commercial complex and a comprehensive health insurance scheme are among the highlights of the 2010-'11 budget of the Muvattupuzha municipality, which was presented recently.
A VIP pavilion at the municipal stadium, renovation of the municipal park, constructing a market complex near the slaughter house, vegetable and meat stalls, a shopping complex at the KSRTC bus stand and completion of the renovation works on the municipal office are among the other proposals.
Waste management
Priority has been given to enhancing basic infrastructure facilities and to ensure cleanliness of the town and its suburbs. The municipality has promised steps for mosquito eradication and waste management. It also promises low-cost sanitation in houses that do not have proper toilets.
Tourism
The budget has earmarked Rs.1 crore for promoting tourism in the Muvattupuzha river.
The municipality hopes to have an income of Rs.34.87 crore and expenditure of Rs.34.31 crore in the financial year. Though no new taxes have been proposed, steps would be taken to collect arrears and to prevent tax evasion.
Ensuring power supply and drinking water for all and implementing the EMS comprehensive housing scheme are among the other promises. An economic survey among the people and steps to ensure all-round development of the town are also planned.
Measures will also be taken to increase the living standards of the people.
An urban hut has been planned to bring different commercial establishments under one roof. A cultural centre, art gallery and library too will be set up.
Also, Rs.6 crore has been set apart for carrying out various schemes in 18 colonies in the municipality. A project is on the anvil to provide refreshments to standard ten students and to extend financial assistance to schools for the differentially-abled children. The expected income includes Rs.1 crore from MP and MLA funds; Rs.80 lakh worth tourism funds; and approximately Rs.4 crore from taxes.
