Bijapur: The Bijapur City Municipal Council (CMC) approved a Rs. 81-lakh surplus budget for the financial year 2010-2011 in its general body meeting here on Monday.

The income was shown at Rs. 85.99 crore while the expenditure was estimated at Rs. 85.11 crore. The expenditure head-wise was Rs. 5.41 crore towards salaries, Rs. 6 lakh for pensions, Rs. 12 lakh for printing and stationery, Rs. 6 crore for administration, Rs. 13.50 lakh for rentals, Rs. 3 crore for laying stone slabs on roads, Rs. 30 lakh for the repair and maintenance of culverts and drains, Rs. 1 crore for maintaining streetlights, Rs. 1.03 crore for fuel and Rs. 90 lakh for outsourcing activities.

Other projected expenditure included Rs. 60 lakh for the repair and maintenance of rainwater drainage system and open drains, Rs. 11.70 lakh towards labour, Rs. 15 lakh for road indicators, Rs. 30 lakh towards public health, Rs. 15 lakh for funerals, Rs. 2.42 crore for cleanliness and solid waste management, Rs. 10 lakh for slaughter houses, Rs. 2.89 crore for water supply, Rs. 1 crore for underground drainage, Rs. 50 lakh for maintenance of urban forests and gardens and Rs. 15 lakh for slum development.

During the discussion, some members pointed out that the civic body was made to pay heavy interest every year for its failure to pay taxes to departments concerned. They also alleged that the CMC had to pay Rs. 1.90 crore as tax to the Commercial Taxes and Income Tax departments. For the delay in making payments, the CMC was paying Rs. 5 lakh as penalty every month to these departments.

They also alleged that the officers concerned had collected the tax amount from contractors and other individuals, but had not remitted them at the two tax departments. They demanded that action be initiated against officers involved in such mistakes.

Vittal Katakdond, MLA, was present at the meeting.
