City Corporation employee sacked

Special Correspondent

Thiruvananthapuram: The city Corporation has removed a casual employee at the Santhikavadam crematorium from service for a mix-up in returning the ashes of a body to the relatives of the deceased.

In the fourth such incident in recent times, the relatives who arrived to collect the ashes found that the urn had been returned to another family, which carried out the immersion rituals.

Complaint

On receiving a complaint, Mayor C. Jayan Babu visited the crematorium on Tuesday morning along with Corporation Secretary K. Biju and Health Officer D. Sreekumar for a detailed investigation into the issue.

“The crematorium is managed by employees engaged by the manufacturers of the furnace, staff of the electrical section in the Corporation and Kudumbasree workers. We traced the mix-up to a casual employee of the Corporation and one of the personnel manning the furnace,” Mr. Babu said.

The casual employee, Satheesh, was removed from service and the company that manufactured the furnace was asked to withdraw its staff responsible for the mix-up. Mr. Babu said the Corporation would do everything possible to prevent such incidents.
