Corporation contractors call off strike
KOCHI: Paving the way for the immediate repair of major city roads which are in a dilapidated condition, the striking contractors of the Kochi Corporation called off their one-and-a-half-month-long strike on Monday. The decision was taken after discussions were held between the Mayor, the Corporation secretary and the representatives of the contractors.
“The Mayor has given a written assurance that the pending arrears till December 31, 2009, will be paid before September end,” Kochi Corporation Contractors Association president M R Chandran Pillai said.
The association members have been boycotting the works of the Kochi Corporation for the past six months.
Hence, a majority of the works, including those under the People’s Plan Programme and the Kerala Sustainable Urban Development Programme, are at a standstill.
The construction of canals, drains, culverts, roads and tarring had also been suspended.
Pillai said the contractors would resume the pending work from this week onwards.
