Footpath cave-in: Stop-work notice issued to developer

A day after a portion of a footpath and the boundary wall adjoining a storm water drain collapsed in Mulund (West) after the foundation work of an under-construction commercial high-rise crashed, the municipal corporation issued a stop-work notice. On Monday, the municipal corporation asked the developer to undertake corrective measures to rectify the damage to the storm water drain line that was damaged in the collapse.

The incident occurred at the junction of the busy JN Road and the Walji Ladha Road on Sunday evening when the sheet pile of a 27-storey commercial high-rise that is coming up in the area collapsed caused the cave-in.

The developer was given permission for a double basement to accommodate a multiplayer parking lot.

Engineers from the corporation’s building proposal department, who visited the site on Monday, were not satisfied by the reason given by the developer that the sheet pile collapsed because of the heavy rainfall on Sunday.

“We will be investigating whether the foundation that was laid was done keeping in mind the specifications by the department. If flaws are found then action will be taken on the structural engineer and developer,” said a senior civic official, on condition of anonymity because he is not authorised to talk to the media.

Deputy Municipal Commissioner Bharat Marathe said the engineers, who had visited the site, will submit their report by Tuesday.
