Guntur corporation pulls it off

Commissions second water pipeline in a record time

Major Industries Minister Kanna Lakshminarayana going to inspect the interlinking of second water pipeline in Guntur on Tuesday.

Guntur: The Engineering Department of Guntur Municipal Corporation (GMC) has achieved a remarkable feat by commissioning the second water pipeline in a record 24 hours of commencing the work.

With the commissioning of second pipeline, water supply to the town is set to be augmented by 45 MLD. The second 45 MLD filtration plant was also activated and water supply was resumed by Tuesday evening. The Municipal Engineering Department, which undertook the major work, came in for praise from all quarters.

Major Industries Minister Kanna Lakshminarayana along with Municipal Commissioner (I/C) switched on the water supply at Takkellapadu filtration plant.

Municipal Engineer S. Upendra Singh, DEE Nageswara Rao and AE Shafi monitored the works.

The GMC pressed 21 teams into service, with five teams working at the five sites where the intersections to the new pipeline were made. Sixteen teams were deputed at work sites where repairs were carried out. The GMC made sure that water was available round the clock by deploying 69 tankers.

“We are proud to achieve the remarkable engineering feat within 24 hours. The water travails of Guntur will end and the augmented water supply will also meet the futuristic needs of the growing city,” in-charge Commissioner A. Sarath told The Hindu. Dr. Sharath, who braved viral fever and undertook repeated visits, appeared visibly pleased with the effort.

Replacing the water pipeline had in the last ended on a fiasco costing a Commissioner his job and the delay in shifting of the pipeline had inordinately delayed the completion of Manipuram RoB.

The engineering officials completed the laying of new 1,200 mm dia MSP pipeline with cement castings from Raghava Nagar to Nehru Nagar High Level Reservoir by Tuesday afternoon. The existing worn out pipeline, which was aligned under Manipuram RoB, was removed paving the way for completing the approach road. The intersections were made at three blocks on Mangalagiri Road at Padmaja Petrol Bunk, one each block at Seethanagaram and Nehru Nagar Railway Crossing.

Later, the engineering officials pumped out the turbid water from Nehru Nagar reservoir. Regular water supply would resume from Wednesday.
