Chandigarh:  The Municipal Corporation would be serving a notice to the agency who was allotted the task of construction of the multi-level parking lot in Sector 17. The agency has failed to respond to the letters sent by the civic body to start work at the site. The whole process would cause further delay in the construction of the multi-level parking that is already been hanging fire for the past three years. In case no positive reply is received, the project would have to be retendered.

The Municipal Corporation had allotted the project to Subhash Projects and Marketing Limited (SPML), New Delhi, in 2007. However, due to the delay in starting construction because of the non-clearance of the designs and later shifting of wires, the project could not take off.

Once the Administration handed over the site to the Municipal Corporation, the civic body wrote to the contractor for starting work. The agency asked for the concession period to be increased to 12 years from seven years at which the contract was given. The request was not agreed to. The civic body had then written to the agency to take charge of the site and start work. However, no response has been received. Chief Engineer S S Bida says, “We would be serving notice to the agency. Depending on the response we get, future course of action would be decided.”

An official, however says that issuing a notice is a formality that has to be completed. The project would need to be reallocated. The multilevel parking lot had been touted as first of its kind in the city when the idea was conceptualized. This was to be the pilot project after completion of which, multilevel parking lots had to be built in other sectors as well. However, the project has failed to take off.
