BMC issues show cause notice to milk supplier

The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has issued a show cause notice to a flavoured milk supplier, Rashtriya Mazdoor Madhyavarti Grahak Sahakari Sanghatana Maryadit (RMMGSS),  seeking explanation over the quality of milk supplied to students in civic schools. The civic body stopped the supply of flavored milk to schools following a laboratory report that said the milk was not fit for consumption. The tests were taken after students from two Malad schools fell ill after consuming the milk.

However, a second report that was conducted found the milk to be fit for human consumption, said civic sources.

The samples had been taken from two schools in Malad when 43 children fell ill on October 14 and 16 after consuming the flavoured milk. The samples were tested at the BMC's laboratory in Dadar.

Vilas Dange, manager of the RMMGSS said, “We have received the BMC’s notice but the first milk samples which were tested in the lab were taken from an open pack, not a sealed one. If the pack is open for three-four hours, the milk will definitely be unfit for consumption.” “The first samples were from an open tetra pack while other samples tested were from an unopened one,” said a BMC officer, on the condition of anonymity, because he is not authorised to speak to the media.

Rahul Shewale chairman of the civic standing committee said, “Some samples were sent to a Pune lab. We will take further action only after we get that report.” “The decision on resuming the milk supply will be taken after a thorough inquiry is completed,” Mhaiskar said in a BMC meeting.
