Pune:  Four years after it was submitted to the civic administration, the nullah survey report has now been tabled for approval by the city improvement committee (CIC) to carry out the restoration work of nullahs across the city.

The flooding during the monsoon had brought to light that many nullahs had been encroached upon or diverted. The proposal said it was necessary to restore the nullahs back to their natural flow to avoid a repeat of the situation.

The report was prepared by private consultant Primove in 2006 at an expense of Rs 72 lakh. Municipal commissioner Mahesh Zagade had recently announced that all survey reports would be compiled to locate nullahs across the city and carry out restoration work.

The civic administration has also undertaken the removal of the concreted base of nullahs done under the Jawaharlal Nehru National Urban Renewal Mission (JNNURM), so that the depth of nullahs can be increased. The civic body has appointed senior officials for each area to carry out an on-field study of the status of nullahs and carry out works to increase their carrying capacity. City improvement committee chairman Virendra Kirad said the administration would be questioned on the delay in tabling the proposal.
