Meaty stir: Merchants seek market in each ward

BHUBANESWAR: The meat merchants of the city took to the streets on Wednesday demanding improved amenities and lesser hassles.

Submitting a memorandum to Governor MC Bhandare, Bhubaneswar branch of the Meat Merchants' Association sought markets in each of the 60 wards of Bhubaneswar.

The "qureshis" have meat business in each ward and hence there should be markets in each ward, president Sk Ayub Qureshi reasoned.

Stating that they have full respect for the Orissa High Court order, the association said the community was happy with the ruling for four abattoirs in the Capital.

But the merchants are concerned over the selling points. The merchants said they are in sync with the Bhubaneswar Municipal Corporation (BMC) order for modernised meat selling markets which would conform to hygiene standards, have drainage system and deep freezers.

But before such markets come up, the existing ones must not be closed down because livelihood of thousands can be affected.

Requesting the governor to direct the BMC to take appropriate measures, the merchants urged the authorities not to harass them.
