Corporation's all-party team to meet ministers

KOCHI: An all-party delegation, led by Mayor Tony Chammany, will soon meet the ministers for Finance, Public Works and Local Self-Government to discuss various issues related to the development of Kochi.

The delegation will discuss issues, including the the financial crisis faced by the local body and its dispute with the Kerala Water Authority on digging of roads by it to lay pipes and about the shortage of staff in some departments. "The date of the meeting is to be decided by the ministers' offices concerned. We have intimated their offices, requesting the date for meeting," Town Planning Committee chairman K J Sohan said. The decision to send an all-party delegation was taken in a recent council meeting. The delegation will have representatives from all the political parties in the present council along with the Mayor and Deputy Mayor. Meanwhile, the Corporation is reeling under a severe financial crisis. The civic body is finding it difficult to pay salary to its employees.

With Christmas approaching, the Corporation will have to pay the salary for the month of January 2011 in advance. According to estimates, the civic body requires Rs 2.5 crore every month to pay for salary while the average revenue earning of the Corporation is estimated at Rs 12 lakh. The Corporation has also asked the Revenue Department to intensify the tax collection.

The Corporation also owes nearly Rs 18 crore to the contractors.
