Mayor asks for review of decision to set up sewage treatment plant

A few days after approving the proposal for setting up a Sewerage Treatment Plant (STP) at Maloya, Mayor Subhash Chawla has asked for a review of the decision. With there being several technologies available for setting up STP, these will also be looked into before a final decision is taken.

During the meeting of the General House held on April 30, an STP was approved amidst objections from the opposition. A meeting of officials of the Municipal Corporation was held by the Mayor wherein it was decided that available technologies will be explored. If required, the issue will once again be taken up in the General House.

Almost a year ago, the agenda for setting up an STP was presented before the House. Councillors raised objections to the passing of the agenda following which a committee headed by Congress councillor Mukesh Bassi was constituted.

The committee saw one plant at Delhi and another one was to be seen at Ludhiana, but the tour never materialised. Last month, Bassi resigned from the committee following which it was dissolved.

When the agenda came up for discussion again in the House, the Congress councillors along with the nominated ones, gave approval to the agenda.

BJP councillors raised objections that the technology being approved was not the most suited and there were others available. While the agenda was approved at that time, a decision has now been taken to explore other options.

BJP councillor Arun Sood who had expressed his opposition to the passing of the proposal said that the review is an eye wash. "The agenda was approved to suit a particular company. The people who raised the issue are being kept out of the developments," he said.
