Civic body demolishes structure in Nigger Mandi

Following the orders of the Punjab and Haryana High Court, the Municipal Corporation on Wednesday demolished an illegal shutter and show window of a complex at Nigger Mandi, near Akalgarh market. However, the MC team had to put in efforts, after shopkeepers resisted and clashed with MC officials and police personnel.

The demolished structure belonged to Kewal Kishan Arora. The case against him was filed by Basant K Arora, following which the high court had directed the MC to demolish the structure within three months, as per the orders issued in December 2012, which the MC received in January.

Kamaljit Kaur, assistant town planner, who led the drive in Zone A, said, "Notices were sent to the violator thrice in 2012, but he did not pay heed. So we had to demolish the shutter covering the ground and first floor, which had made the opening of other shops difficult. Also, a show window made on common land was demolished".

She added that shopkeepers misbehaved and clashed with the MC officials and police, but they were successful in demolishing it.
