Ponda Municipal Council chairperson vows to work for development of Ponda

PONDA: Radhika Nayak was declared chairperson and Shantaram Kolvenkar as vice-chairperson of the Ponda Municipal Council (PMC) on Tuesday. Following the declaration, Nayak, who won the chair after a span of about 11 years, promised to "work for the overall development of the town".

Nayak and first-timer Kolvenkar were chosen for the posts of chairperson and the vice-chairperson on Monday after no other person filed their nomination for the posts.

They were officially declared elected on Tuesday by Salcete deputy collector Surendra Naik, who acted as the election officer for the posts.

Nayak, an MGP supporter, announced that she would work for the betterment of Ponda with the cooperation of local MLA Lavoo Mamledar and PWD minister Ramkrishna 'Sudin' Dhavalikar.

Nayak served as the PMC chairperson after her victory in 1996. In 1996, the election was held after a long rule by the administrator. Following the delimitation of wards, the administrator also ruled the council from February 7 to May 20, 2013.
